If I told you I stayed up until 3am watching a mockumentary about dicks being graffiti-d on to cars, you’d probably give me a weird look, to be fair you probably saw the title and screwed your face. But trust me, after watching the trailer below, you’ll also be doing the same as me – you’re welcome.
If you haven’t yet watched American Vandal, drop everything and watch it now, seriously. It’s a well-thought out, hilarious spoof of a true-crime documentary, but whilst many think it’s based on a real story, it’s in fact not. So after watching all eight episodes, feel free to tweet your thoughts with the hashtag #whodrewthedicks and don’t worry, none of this is real so you’re not offending anyone. (Although if you’re offended by the word, this programme isn’t for you).
Hanover High student, Dylan Maxwell plays the ‘high school jerk’ who was suspended for allegedly spray-painting 27 dicks on cars in the staff car-parking lot. During the mockumentary, two film students, Peter Maldonado and Sam Ecklund decided to make a documentary by taking a look at the suspects and focusing on student’s motives and their alibis. The whole point of this is to clear Dylan’s name who swears he is innocent. But despite the solid “evidence” which points towards him being guilty, some things just don’t add up, putting his guilt into question.
Everyone suspects Dylan of drawing the dicks after admitting it was pretty “funny”, but a “bitch move” for letting him take the fall when he didn’t do it. He was known for always misbehaving and drawing dicks on the whiteboard of Mrs. Shapiro, a teacher who he hates. So it’s no real surprise they would be his first suspect.
His case took a turn for the worst when eyewitness, Alex Trimboli claimed he “100%” saw Dylan do it, putting him at the scene of the crime. The timeline was off and according to what Dylan did that day, it would be difficult for him to have committed the crime and return to his friends, all within 30 minutes.
Since there are rumors of a second season, let’s try to figure out who did what…
What We Know…
From the start, there are plenty of clues which can narrow down our suspect list. Let’s start with the CCTV footage of the parking lot.
We know somebody deleted the security footage meaning 1) they had to have known what they were doing with the technical side of it and 2) there were only ten people who had access to the footage (that we know of). The suspects include the film teacher and the “Morning Show 9”.
The crime happened between 2-2:30pm meaning he/she/they only had 30 minutes to draw the dicks and deleted the footage which we know is possible to do BUT only in 29 minutes.
Who Drew the Dicks?
Peter Maldonado & Sam Ecklund
So maybe the people making the documentary drew the dicks. It’s possible they could easily manipulate the information we see in order to appear innocent, but they weren’t even suspects in the first place and Dylan was already accused so if they wanted to get away with it, this whole thing would have been pointless.
Dylan & Mackenzie
We know it wasn’t them because Mackenzie was eventually forced to reveal a video which would later exonerates both her and Dylan. Her motive came from the fact she trashed the office belonging to P.E teacher, Coach Rafferty because he slept with her mum, stopping her parents from getting back together. She also wrote “stick your dick somewhere else” on the board and five days later, the crime happened. During the video, we then see Dylan did in fact stop by with dog food, but walked in on Mackenzie at the time of her video – proof it wasn’t him.
He was the person who held the key to this case, but when the video came out, his witness testimony was thrown in the trash…along with his reputation. He lied about everything which is no surprise and although he technically didn’t have a solid alibi and was at the school at the time of the crime, I think we can rule him out.
She had it out for Dylan and his older brother. So is it possible that she framed Dylan by coercing Trimboli into identifying him as the drawer, just like she did with the test situation? We then found out her tyre wasn’t slashed after all like she said but it was in fact punctured by a nail and according to those who fixed the car, it’s a common area for a nail to go into tyres. But despite her saying it was Dylan and he could have hammered the nail into the car, we really need to sit her down and tell her to shut up, right?
So we did see the whole Sam-Brandon jealousy thing going on but from the party footage, he had the spray paint to write on the towel but threw it into the bushes. It lay there but minutes before the police arrived, we now notice the spray paint has gone, meaning somebody in the garden must have taken it, ruling him out. This is where the whole ‘splatter situation’ came in.
The ‘popular girl’ in school has a solid alibi despite still being a suspect. But it all checks out, she was just caught up in Alex Trimboli’s lies.
The school president who’s always has something say or protest about.
We discovered she actually made the complaint against Rafferty who wasn’t too keen on her trying out for the football team. After the video emerged online of her at tryouts, we see Rafferty talking to her and we know she didn’t want to talk about it – so what did he say to make her so mad? and why did she wait to talk to Sam and Peter AFTER she graduated.
She was upset the school district dismissed her complaint and days later, the dicks were drawn. Another useful video of the party emerged when Ming needed CPR. But Christa (who’s alibi was her CPR training) yelled “Who knows CPR?”…making her jump to the top of the suspect list.
What about her broken leg you say? Take a look below…
YES – THE CAST SWITCHED LEGS. SHE LIED!!!

Perhaps the ‘Free Dylan’ t-shirts was part of her guilty conscious, but she could have had an accomplice. After all, she doesn’t know CPR, even when she claimed she was at CPR training as her alibi. When investigated further, we found out her bf Van Delorey certified the training…Hmmmm.
Let’s be honest, it was probably Christa and perhaps her boyfriend too. If she didn’t have a broken leg, she could have done it alone. If she did have a broken leg, it is possible she was the one to delete the footage and for Van to draw the dicks.
We don’t know who drew them for sure and I really hope we get a second season to find out.
