— Disappearance —
On November 9, 2007, 24-year-old Kyle went missing after a night out with family and friends. His last known sighting was by a cab driver at 2am – 10 years later, Kyle is still missing.
Before he went out drinking with friends, Kyle took his sister, friends and mum (Barbra) to a comedy show in order to lift her spirits as Barbra was just diagnosed with breast cancer and was due to have surgery.
After the show, he went out drinking with friends who would all leave the bar at around 11pm-1am. Kyle however, decides to stay and drink more. Later CCTV captures Kyle dancing with a woman who leaves with her boyfriend and two other men. The bar’s CCTV shows Kyle walking out alone with no coat in 30F (-1C) weather around 2.20am that morning. He had left his jacket and debit card in the bar. He walks to Fuel Pizza and orders two “extreme” slices and according to his dad (Dick) he loved food so we know this isn’t out of character. However questions are raised as if he went to pay for the pizza should he have noticed his debit card was missing and went back, perhaps he had change? Was he intoxicated to the point he didn’t know what he was doing? His friend Daniel said:
“I wasn’t extremely intoxicate by any means.I don’t think he had reached the point he wasn’t aware of his surroundings.”
Kyle reportedly makes several calls to family and a friend. Signals from two cell towers place him in the uptown Charlotte area at the time of the calls – all of which were around 4-10 seconds long and he never left a voicemail although speculation says he may have been looking for a lift home. After they woke up to the missed calls, Daniel saw his car was in the drive and immediately called his roommates and parents – nobody knew were Kyle was.
Police started asking cab drivers if they had seen anything.Someone came forward to say they noticed a male matching Kyle’s description walking on North Davidson Street (heading away from uptown Charlotte towards Cordelia Park). He stood out as he had no jacket on in a rough part of town and appeared to be intoxicated. Unfortunately, this is the last reported sighting of him.
Cadaver dogs were brought in but followed the same path as expected from the data from the call towers. However a man near the homeless shelter said he was killed in the park but didn’t know where his body was. The park was known for drug deals and gangs. The last known location of Kyle’s phone was the bridge before the entrance to the park. It’s strange as he knew this part of the area wasn’t the friendliest so it shocks people he even went near there. Google maps says it would have taken him around 36 minutes to walk from The Buckhead Saloonto (bar) to Cordelia Paek. This raises more alarm bells as it’s long way in the dark with no jacket.
— Theory —
Dick says that despite other theories and speculation he believes his son was drunk and disoriented when he wandered up North Davidson Street. He thinks someone driving by spotted what seemed to be an easy robbery targetand ended up killing Kyle, dumping his body in a construction site at North Davidson and 16th streets. “He never would have left” his father said.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police urge anyone who might know something about Kyle Fleischmann’s disappearance to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
